Name That Shifter, No. 87: 1986 Lamborghini Jalpa
On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. We expected this week’s shifter selection to pose a greater challenge, but many of you identified it early on. The first commenter to correctly name it as a 1986 Lamborghini Jalpa shifter was huisj203, who will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
The Jalpa pictured here is from our June 1986 issue. Lamborghini’s wild Countach pretty much stole the spotlight in the 1980s, leaving the Jalpa to play second fiddle in the Italian sports-car-maker’s lineup. The Jalpa sprang from the earlier Urraco, and was powered by a mid-mounted, 250-hp 3.5-liter V-8. (The Countach, of course, featured a rip-snorting V-12.) While no match for its big brother, the Jalpa nonetheless put down respectable numbers: 60 mph came up in 5.8 seconds, and top speed was a decent 148 mph. Best of all, the wedge-shaped Jalpa looked as exotic as it was, despite its lack of a wild body kit.
