2013 Ford C-Max Energi Gets EPA-Rated 620-Mile Range

2013 Ford C-Max Energi

According to Google Maps, Detroit is just less than 615 miles from New York. It’s a pretty familiar drive to a number of our staffers, and generally it takes us about two tanks of gas to get there. But if we were to make that trip in the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, we’d get there in one—just barely—thanks to it’s EPA-rated range of 620 miles. Initially, Ford guesstimated a 550-mile range for its new plug-in hybrid, which was still 10 miles more than the Prius plug-in hybrid. But with the plug-in C-Max’s range being upped by 70 miles, it now betters Toyota’s plug-in Prius by 80 and the Chevy Volt by a massive 240 miles.

The C-Max Energi also can drive up to 21 miles on just electricity. That’s six miles more than the Prius plug-in’s 15-mile electric-only range.  The Energi accomplishes this with a 141-hp, 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder paired with an electric motor for a total output of 195 hp. The plug-in C-Max will go on sale this fall for $33,745, but will qualify for a $3750 tax credit for a sticker price starting just under $30,000. On the bang-for-your-buck scale, the C-Max Energi is cheaper than its competition, and more efficient, as well.
