Mahonen new FIA rally director
World Rally Championship commission president Jarmo Mahonen has taken up a new role within the FIA, becoming rally director of world motorsport’s governing body.
Mahonen, formerly the driving force behind Rally Finland, will relocate from his homeland to the FIA office in Geneva – the city which will also be the base for the WRC’s incoming promoters Red Bull Media House and Sportsman Media.
He will continue to work closely with WRC manager Michele Mouton.
“We are at the dawn of a fresh and exciting era for our sport and having a new and dedicated management team in place will ensure we are ready to respond to future challenges,” said Mahonen.
“Putting the FIA World Rally Championship firmly back on the global map is a priority, as is ensuring we have a clear cost-effective structure and ladder of opportunity for all our competitors around the world.
“We have challenging times ahead, but this is going to be a very dynamic period for rallying.”
