Newsham accepts grid penalty

British Touring Car frontrunner Dave Newsham will start fifth for the first race at Silverstone after not appealing his grid penalty.

Newsham’s ES Racing Vauxhall Vectra had set a time good enough for second, but had run off the track at Copse. The time was disallowed, dropping Newsham to fifth.

He had planned to protest, but no appeal was received by the organisers and the Vectra will therefore line up on row three, with Mat Jackson’s Motorbase NGTC Ford Focus joining Jason Plato’s works MG6 on the front row.

The start of race one, scheduled for 11:45, is also likely to be delayed.

Fog has prevented the meeting from getting under way and the timetable is already over half an hour behind.
