FIA opens up 2014 WTCC tech rules

Alain Menu Chevrolet WTCC Shanghai 2012The FIA has opened up World Touring Car Championship regulations to provide for more powerful cars and greater aerodynamic packages from 2014.

The changes, agreed upon at the December meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, will also allow for improved performance through reduced weights on the 2014 Super 2000 cars.

The FIA will allow teams greater technical freedom, abandoning the current system of performance balancing.

Front and rear wheel drive will continue to be equalised however.

The FIA said it expected to achieve the changes without significantly impacting upon costs.

WTCC promoter Marcello Lotti told AUTOSPORT earlier in the year that he did not expect radical changes.

The planned July visit to Curitiba, Brazil will be dropped from next year’s calendar, which will feature 12 rounds as a result.

After initial forays this season, including a podium in Macau, Honda will enter the WTCC full-time next season.

It will be joined by Lada, while Citroen is weighing up entering in 2014.
