Name That Shifter, No. 106: 1968 Toyota 2000GT
On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. We had figured the rarity of this week’s mystery car would have upped the difficulty, but we were pretty wrong. The first commenter to post a guess, Mr. Bryan, also was the first to correctly identify the shifter as belonging to the 1967 Toyota 2000GT. Mr. Bryan will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
We tested a different 2000GT than the one pictured here in our 1969 Yearbook. Toyota’s first GT-grade sports car wasn’t cheap—it cost $7230 back in the day—but it was a bit of a technological marvel. The 2000GT’s 2.0-liter inline-six (that’s not a misprint, it actually displaced just two liters) produced an impressive 150 hp at 7000 rpm. Power was routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh five-speed manual, and the steering wheel spun just 2.4 turns from lock to lock. Each corner of the car was supported by independent wishbones and boasted a disc brake; the wheels were fabricated from lightweight magnesium alloy. Oh, and the thing looked like a Japanese Jaguar E-type; it’s still gorgeous today.
