Fiat Reveals EPA-Estimated MPGe Numbers for 2013 500E

After much gestation, Fiat brought us its electrified 500 at last year’s L.A. auto show. Now the Italian brand has announced just how efficient the 500E will be. The diminutive city car, powered by a peppy 111-hp electric motor, gets EPA ratings of 108 MPGe highway and 122 MPGe in the city. The 500E’s MPGe rating, Fiat claims, is better than that of any other U.S.-market electric vehicle, yielding an annual fuel-equivalent cost of $500—which, Fiat says, represents “unsurpassed frugality.”

The 500E’s estimated range also received approval from the EPA at 87 miles, which Fiat pointed out was best in its class. We do wonder, however, just who Fiat includes in the 500E’s class. Although we’re not certain the Nissan Leaf and the Ford Focus Electric are vehicles Fiat considers in its class, those two have ranges of 73 and 76 miles, respectively. Recharging the electric 500 takes less than four hours if you have a 240-volt charger; if you’re stuck on 120-volt power, be prepared to wait 22 full hours before your elettrico Cinquecento completes its full charge. The 500E goes on sale in California this summer.
