Chris Economaki had a reedy, squeaky voice—“a rabbit with laryngitis,” is how stock-car writer Tex Swiston once described it—that should have obviated any TV career. Fact is, Chris might more profitably have been a barker at Coney Island—he was, at heart, a racetrack promoter. Mind you, it could have been precisely that awful trebly honk, which so deftly pierced the cacophony of open exhausts, that ultimately rewarded Chris with 35 happy years on TV and 66 years reporting for his beloved National Speed Sport News.
