Name That Shifter, No. 113: 1986 Suzuki Samurai
On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1986 Suzuki Samurai was Matt Hadden, who will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
These Samurai photos are from Suzuki’s 1986 press materials for the little SUV. We previewed the Samurai in our November 1985 issue, noting at the time that the SUV was more of an economy car with charm and a sense of adventure than an all-out Jeep competitor. Still, the Samurai came with a low-range transfer case, significant ground clearance, and steep approach and departure angles of 48 and 39 degrees. Power came from a 1.3-liter four-cylinder making a puny 63 horsepower—but that was reasonably sufficient given the Samurai only weighed a little over 2100 pounds.
