Mitsubishi Debuting GR-HEV Hybrid Truck, CA-MiEV EV Concepts [2013 Geneva Auto Show]
Mitsubishi may be barely present in the American auto market, but it’s going to be a bit more visible at the 2013 Geneva auto show, where it will show a pair of fuel-efficient concepts. Both show pieces are being previewed ahead of their official debuts, and have inscrutable, alphabet-soup names. The first is the CA-MiEV electric car (pictured above), and the second is the GR-HEV hybid pickup truck. Mitsubishi is looking to build off of the, er, momentum of the Outlander plug-in hybrid it debuted at last year’s Paris auto show by creating a “full global EV palette.”
CA-MiEV Suburban EV Concept
Mitsubishi’s MiEV electric city car (i-MiEV here in the U.S.) has been on sale for a few years now—globally, at least—and the automaker recognizes that battery and electric-motor technology has progressed. This CA-MiEV (no, we don’t know what the “CA” addenda means, either), therefore, is designed to preview a more modular EV architecture that can accomodate future high-density battery and motor tech that allow for increased driving range and efficiency. To that end, Mitsubishi kept the CA-MiEV’s weight and drag to a minimum, and claims the car delivers a 186-mile range.

GR-HEV Sport Utility Hybrid Truck Concept
Despite its bizarre name, which reminds us of something Pixar would have named a robot in the movie WALL-E, the GR-HEV actually is quite cool in concept. The pickup truck is a diesel-electric hybrid, and it’s bestowed with Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control all-wheel-drive setup. Mitsubishi doesn’t specify how the hybrid system is arrayed in the GR-HEV, but it does say there is a diesel engine as well as “electric motors”—note the plurality of motors. The Outlander plug-in hybrid features two electric motors, one mounted up front with the gas engine and a second that lives on the rear axle, so the GR-HEV could have a similar arrangement. We’ll find out more when the concept is fully revealed in Geneva, but color us intrigued.
