Name That Shifter, No. 115: 1989 Citroën XM
On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. A few of you noticed our minor photo edits to this weeks’s image; the deletion of some dashboard iconography was intended to make this contest more difficult. Our efforts were only partially successful—Ryan May correctly identified the stick as belonging to a 1989 Citroën XM. Ryan will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
The XM pictured here is from our November 1989 issue. A descendant of the oddball, avante-garde Citroën DS and CX sedans, the XM was an oddball, avante-garde piece, too. The XM featured a complicated evolution of the DS and CX’s hydropneumatic suspension system, to which an electronic control unit was added to adjust the suspension’s firmness on the fly. Power came from a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo V-6 engine making a decent (for the time) 168 horsepower. Styling came in the form of a super slippery Bertone-designed body, which claimed a supremely low 0.28 coefficient of drag.
