Solberg wins Historic Rally Sweden

Petter SolbergPetter Solberg celebrated a second Rally Sweden victory on Saturday as he dominated the Historic event in his Ford Escort MkII.

In what is likely to be his last rally of the year before he switches to rallycross for the rest of the season, Solberg delighted big crowds on the Swedish stages.

“I have had so much fun,” said Solberg. “It’s been absolutely fantastic. There have been so many people out there just waving us on like mad.”

The Historic event included a single run through the Vargasen stage on Friday, before the Sagen, Fredriksberg, Rammen and Hagfors Sprint tests on day two.

Solberg and his co-driving wife Pernilla suffered a gearbox problem on the sole Friday stage, which meant the Norwegians spent Saturday devoid of reverse.

“There was a bit of pressure with no reverse gear,” said Solberg, “but it was no problem. Pernilla and I worked well together.

“I know Pernilla is standing next to me, but trust me, she did a fantastic job on the pace notes!

“It was nice to be back in these stages and the noise… did you hear it? It was amazing, 10,400 revs – fantastic!”
