Long before the leaders of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler were summoned to testify before a congressional committee in late 2008, evidence of the decline of the American carmakers was manifest. That “the Detroit Three” had replaced “the Big Three” in colloquial reference reflected a begrudging acceptance that a generation had passed since this ruling troika had set the industry’s agenda.
