Tordoff hopeful of top BTCC drive
Sam Tordoff is optimistic of joining a frontrunning British Touring Car Championship team for the coming season.
Tordoff, 23, made a one-off appearance in the series in a Triple 8 Vauxhall in 2010, but has spent the past two years winning races in the BTCC-supporting Porsche Carrera Cup.
He is now planning to step-up again for the 2013 season.
“The plan is to race in British Touring Cars this year,” he said on the AUTOSPORT Stage with KX on Thursday.
“It’s something I’ve been working towards for the past four years on the TOCA package, so that’s the aim.
“Things are still in negotiations and should be announced soon.”
Tordoff was joined on stage by fellow KX Akademy members Luke Herbert, Rob Boston and Stefan Hodgetts, as well as the programme’s mentor Jason Plato.
Two-time BTCC champion Plato revealed what had made Tordoff and the other supported drivers stand out from the rest.
“It was pretty much a given that of the 150 serious candidates, the 20 shortlisted were all serious and all had the potential to do well,” said the MG BTCC driver.
“We wanted to identify some young guys who had an understanding of what they needed to do for their sponsors and for KX in terms of increasing brand awareness, and I’m not just talking about putting stickers on cars; anyone can do that.
“These guys all came up with some cracking ideas, and we’ll be trying to push through some of those ideas this year.”
