Ram Announces 2014 1500 EcoDiesel Pickup Coming Later This Year
It looks as though Chrysler is fully embracing the diesel engine, having already introduced an oil-burning Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2014, the company’s Ram division is introducing a diesel-powered light-duty pickup later this year. This move will make Ram the purveyor of the only diesel-powered non-heavy-duty pickup in the marketplace, at least until Ford and GM decide to enter the fray—if they decide to do so.
Ram’s announcement for the 2014 1500 EcoDiesel doesn’t include many specifics, but it does note that the V-6 engine will displace three liters and back up to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Recall that Ram already has beaten its full-size-pickup competition to the I Have More Transmission Gears Than You punch after fitting eight-speeds to V-6 iterations of its updated-for-2013 1500.

We’re confident that the 3.0-liter V-6—which is manufactured by Italian firm VM Motori—is the same unit found under the hood of the 2014 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. Ram representatives tell us the engine is similar, but there will be several changes to optimize it for truck duty. Power figures are forthcoming, but don’t expect them to differ vastly from those of the Jeep EcoDiesel, which packs 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Ram plans to reveal more information closer to the 1500 EcoDiesel’s launch in the third quarter of this year.
