Name That Shifter, No. 118: 1958 Bristol 406

Name That Shifter

1958 Bristol 406

Shifter No. 118On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Given this week’s Geneva auto show, we thought we’d bring some decidedly Euro flair to this week’s shifter, and only a European GT would do. But no one figured out the stick belongs to a 1958 Bristol 406 coupe.

The 406 pictured here is from Bristol’s original press materials for the car. Originally called the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the boutique British automaker turned out some choice GT cars over the years. The 406 featured a 2.2-liter inline six that produced an impressive—for its displacement—105 horsepower, and it worked away beneath a long, sleek hood. The car’s interior featured nifty pop-up headrests on the seats and a telescoping steering column, and the dashboard’s clean layout looks good even by modern standards. Those serrated steering wheel spokes are a Bristol signature.
